Good evening
Howdy folks, how's tricks?
I hope you're all in the mood for some last-16 Capital One Cup action, as that's exactly what we've got for you tonight.
Last night saw Chelsea limp past a plucky Shrewsbury side, while Liverpool left it very late to see off Swansea at Anfield. Recap all of last night's games here and then we'll get ready to take on tonight's slate of matches, which are:
  • Manchester City vs Newcastle
  • Tottenham vs Brighton
  • Stoke vs Southampton
And that's not all, as we'll have the quarter-final draw for you at 9.45ish, because we're good like that. So make yourself a cup of tea and we'll get cracking.
6:32 pm
Manchester City have been boosted by Samir Nasri's return to the squad for tonight's Capital One Cup clash.
The Frenchman has been out of action for Manuel Pellegrini's men for the past seven games following groin surgery but is likely to take a place on the bench at the Etihad tonight.
Frank Lampard is still struggling with the thigh strain he suffered against Tottenham earlier in the month and is unlikely to be back in action before the weekend's Manchester derby.
Pellegrini said in a news conference: "The injury situation is just Frank Lampard with his muscle injury. I don't think he will be fit this weekend but maybe next week he can be."
6:50 pm
Manchester City team news
Manuel Pellegrini has left England goalkeeper Joe Hart on the bench for tonight's game, with Willy Caballero taking to the sticks.
Captain Vincent Kompany will play no part at all in the game, with Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala partnering each other for the first time this season.
No Sergio Aguero up front, but he is on the bench should Pellegrini require him.
City starting XI: Caballero, Sagna, Demichelis, Mangala, Kolarov, Milner, Toure, Fernandinho, Silva, Jovetic, Dzeko
City subs: Hart, Boyata, Zabaleta, Nasri, Fernando, Navas, Aguero.
6:53 pm
Newcastle United team news
Alan Pardew has decided not to start Sammy Ameobi despite his heroics just seconds after coming on the pitch at Tottenham on Saturday.
Ryan Taylor makes his first start for the Magpies in over two years, making this a big night for him.
Tim Krul will be watching from the bench, as Rob Elliot gets his chance in goal.
Newcastle starting XI: Elliot; Janmaat, Coloccini, Dummett, Haïdara; R.Taylor, Abeid, Colback; Obertan, Armstrong, Aarons.
Newcastle subs: Krul, Sissoko, Ameobi, Cabella, Gouffran, Riviere, Perez.
7:11 pm
The weekend just gone...
Despite sitting at the other ends of the Premier League table, the two teams come into this game on the back on contrasting weekends.
City will be ruing missing out on their chance to gain ground on the Premier League title race when they lost 2-1 at West Ham. A late David Silva goal was not enough to see Pellegrini's men claw back the deficit.
Silva starts again tonight.
Newcastle, on the other hand, recorded an impressive away day victory at Tottenham, coming from behind at the break to claim the win.
That follows up a 1-0 home win to Leicester and a third win on the trot tonight, against one of the competition favourites, would see an enormous weight lifted off the shoulders of under-pressure Alan Pardew.
7:15 pm
Breaking: Game delayed
One of the three Capital One Cup games tonight has had kick-off put back by 15 minutes.
Tottenham's clash at White Hart Lane against Brighton and Hove Albion will not kick-off now until 8pm.
This is down to crowd congestion outside of the stadium.
It is unsure if this will effect the timing of the quarter-final draw after the game.
Stay tuned on this blog, we will bring you any further updates from all three of the Capital One Cup games this evening.
7:29 pm
John Cross
Crossie at Spurs
Greetings from White Hart Lane where the drizzle is falling on my laptop.
Not good...
Tottenham make 10 changes from their line-up against Newcastle on Sunday. Jan Vertonghen is the only survivor.
Brighton make six changes.
Great chance for a trophy this for Spurs, but can Brighton cause an upset.
Sami Hyypia in the dugout - still looks young enough to be playing.
7:36 pm
10 minutes until kick-off
With not long to go until kick-off, here is a little recap on what went down last night in the Capital One Cup...
Derby came from 2-0 down to win 5-2 against Fulham.
MK Dons were knocked out by two late goals from Sheffield United.
Liverpool also left it late to secure the win against Swansea.
Chelsea edged past the resilient Shrewsbury with a late Didier Drogba strike.
And Bournemouth caused an upset by dumping out Premier League West Brom 2-1.
7:38 pm

More from Crossie at Spurs
Tottenham's line-up so attacking. Two out and out wingers in Lennon and Townsend. Two forwards with Kane and Soldado.
Should be fun.
Mark Clattenburg is the referee. No Ed Sheeran songs yet.
At least Mauricio Pochettino has got his excuses in early with the side of the pitch...
7:41 pm
Quarter-final draw
Remember to stay tuned with us after the action from all of the Capital One Cup games this evening.
The draw for the quarter-finals will be be brought to you right away on this live blog.
Derby County, Sheffield United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Bournemouth have all secured their names in the hat after wins last week.
Tonight, Manchester City take on Newcastle, Brighton visit Tottenham and Stoke host Southampton, as the final three names in the hat are decided.
7:43 pm
What we have learned from Capital One Cup this week so far...
The Capital One cup took a while to warm up tonight but in the end, it brought us goals, late drama and five quarter finalists.
Chelsea overcame a competitive Shrewsbury Town side 2-1, the visitors scoring either side of an Andy Mangan goal, firstly via Didier Drogba, with the winner coming thanks to a Jermaine Grandison own-goal.
Swansea were knocked out by Liverpool, losing 2-1 at Anfield thanks to a winner from Dejan Lovren with pretty much the last kick of game.
7:44 pm
Teams are out
Handshakes and hand slaps galore on the pitch.
The teams are out and are set for action.
City wearing their traditional sky blue, Newcastle in their iconic black and white stripes.
7:45 pm
Kick-off
We are underway at the Etihad Stadium.
City kicking from left to right as they look to continue their quest for back-to-back Capital One Cups.
Updates from Stoke v Southampton and Tottenham v Brighton will also follow on this blog.
So sit back and enjoy the action with us!
7:48 pm
David Anderson
Newcastle's teamsheet reads like a surrender note and boss Alan Pardew makes six changes in a clear sign of his priorities.
He isn't going to lose any sleep over the Capital One Cup when he is fighting for his managerial lie at St James' Park and his team selection reflects that.
Adam Armstrong, aged just 17, and Rolando Aarons, who is 18, make only their second starts for the Toon. Ryan Taylor also makes his first appearance since August 2012 after suffering two cruciate ligament injuries.
You have to feel for the Toon Army and they have sold out their 3,000 allocation to watch such a weakened side.
It is hard to see how Newcastle can end their 17-match run without a win against City. City also make sweeping changes, seven to be precise, although you can hardly say they are much weaker with the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva, Edin Dzeko and James Milner in their starting line-up.
7:50 pm
Early scare for Manchester City as David Silva receives treatment on the pitch.
The little Spaniard, who scored a succulent goal at West Ham at the weekend, is having to hobble off to the side.
City, as a result of the challenge, have a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area and it is the first real chance of the game so far.
7:53 pm
GOAL! City 0-1 Newcastle (Aarons)
Shock at the Etihad Stadium!
Rolando Aarons darts down the right-hand side of the goal and slots through the despairing legs of Willy Caballero.
The goalkeeper could have done a lot better in truth, but the Magpies reacted brightly to a missed City free-kick and caught the hosts on the hop.
Surprise result on the cards? Looks like it as it stands!
7:54 pm
GOAL! Stoke 0-1 Saints (Pelle)
Early strike in the game in Staffordshire as Graziano Pelle fires home for Southampton.
The Italian is on fire at the moment.
7:56 pm
Manchester City have had to take David Silva off as a result of the knock he received in the opening minutes.
Double blow for Manuel Pellegrini, who has just seen his side go 1-0 down to a Rolando Aarons strike.
Samir Nasri has come on in his place, making his first appearance in eight games for the Sky Blues, whose fans give him a rousing reception.
7:58 pm
The momentum at the Etihad Stadium is well and truly with the visitors now, who are playing with their tails up.
Rolando Aarons and Gabriel Obertan are proving a handful for the experienced Manchester City back-line.
They have just won a free-kick on the edge of the box and in the early stages look far more likely to double their lead than City bagging an equaliser.
That free-kick, taken by Ryan Taylor, was fired into the wall.
8:00 pm
The Etihad Stadium, often criticised for a lack of supporters during matches, looks packed to the brim tonight.
City slowly beginning to pick up a little more possession, but are struggling to create much.
The hosts were stunned by the early strike from Aarons.
8:01 pm
David Anderson
Anderson at the Etihad
They think big things of Rolando Aarons on Tyneside - and the teenage striker shows why when he gives Newcastle a surprise early lead inside six minutes.
Taylor robs Fernandinho 30 yards out, knocking the ball through for Aarons to run through and score through Willy Caballero's legs.
It is Aarons' second goal for Newcastle after he netted in the 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace in August and another sign of his huge potential.
Worse follows for Manchester City and David Silva is forced off on nine minutes with damaged knee ligaments following an earlier challenge with Taylor.
The Newcastle midfielder tugged him over and he appeared to twist his knee as he went down.
8:06 pm
City are pressing hard now and have started playing some succulent one and two-touch football.
First, Newcastle got in a muddle on the edge of their own penalty area and Dzeko, Jovetic, Milner and Sagna all linked up to create an opportunity, but the Toon players got enough players behind the ball.
And now Jovetic has just been denied again by Elliot. Nasri's ball in was excellent but the keeper's positioning was top notch.
Elsewhere, Tottenham and Brighton are now seven minutes into their tie, which was delayed due to crowd congestion.
8:10 pm
After the initial scare, City have got themselves back on top and have control of the game.
They are keeping possession as well as we have become to know in the Premier League and it is only a matter of time before the chances will follow, surely.
That dominance of the centre of the park is evident in the latest possession stats from the first 20 minutes.

Yellow card (Dummett)
First card of the game goes to Paul Dummett, who lunges in towards Stevan Jovetic from behind.
No complaints from the defender, nor his captain Fabio Coloccini.
26 minutes played at the Etihad, Newcastle still lead 1-0.
8:13 pm
Coloccini is very fortunate to not have an own goal to his name.
His scuffed clearance attempts skims the outside of the post and goes behind for a corner.
From the resulting set piece, Jovetic again fires over the bar, but City's dominance on the game is looking likely to soon follow with a goal.
Entertaining and open game at the Etihad,

Crossie at Spurs
It's like the Alamo at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham piling on the pressure but unable to find a way through.
Surely won't be long...
All of the current scores in the Capital One Cup: Manchester City 0-1 Newcastle, Stoke 0-1 Southampton, Tottenham 0-0 Brighton.
8:17 pm
GOAL! Stoke 0-2 Saints (Long)
Half an hour played and Southampton are looking like continuing their incredible season by booking their place in the fifth round of the Capital One Cup.
First, Graziano Pelle scored a thunderbolt to give them the lead.
Now they have doubled that advantage with a strike from his strike partner Shane Long.
Not many teams will want to face Saints in this form at the moment!
8:19 pm
Just when you think City are on top, Newcastle come back fighting.
Paul Dummett has just had a glorious effort cleared off the line by Willy Caballero.
You do have to say that he probably should have scored!
1-0 to the Magpies on 34 minutes.
8:20 pm
David Anderson
Anderson at the Etihad
Losing was definitely not in the script for Manchester City, especially in derby week, and the holders try to find an equaliser.
Stevan Jovetic is twice denied in quick succession when Rob Elliot parries his first shot and Jack Colback blocks his follow-up.
Fabricio Coloccini then slices a clearance against his own post with Elliot beaten in a let-off for the Toon.
But they are hanging on and City are having a much tougher evening than they must have expected.
8:21 pm
The night could be going from bad to worse for Manchester City.
First they went a goal down, then they had David Silva taken off with a knee injury - and now they could have even more injury worries.
Yaya Toure, make-shift captain for the night, has had to receive some treatment, but he has hobbled back onto the pitch and looks set to continue.
8:24 pm
Absolutely no rest for either team's back lines - mainly because the back lines of both sides are joining the attack themselves.
The experienced pairing of Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala are working together for the first time but are being kept on their toes by their lively opponents, who continue to press and break from the back quickly.
8:26 pm
What is the secret behind Southampton's success?
They currently lead 2-0 at Stoke and it looks like absolutely nothing is stopping them going on to claim trophies this year.
The Potters have had the ball in the back of the net in Staffordshire, but it has been ruled out for offside.
Scores on the doors: Manchester City 0-1 Newcastle; Stoke 0-2 Southampton; Tottenham 0-0 Brighton.
8:29 pm
Some sustained City pressure now as Newcastle look desperate for half-time with their lead.
Dzeko has just headed wide from a corner but that was not before a long-range Yaya Toure effort was palmed away by Elliot.
Nervous times for both teams. Magpies holding on to a vital lead, City doing all they can to get themselves back into the game.
Two minutes left of the 45.
8:35 pm
HT City 0-1 Newcastle
Well, well, well... we didn't expect this one, did we?
Rolando Aarons gave the visitors a shock half-time lead with a low driven shot from the right-hand side of the box.
Second blow for the Sky Blue's came when David Silva was taken off injured, just what they would not have wanted.
Pressure from both sides since had lead to an entertaining contest.
Elsewhere, it is the end of the opening 45 at the Britannia: Stoke 0-2 Southampton.
After 30 minutes, it is Tottenham 0-0 Brighton. They were an 8pm start.
8:36 pm

Crossie at Spurs
Brighton have weathered the early storm and made me laugh.
When Ben Davies gave away a free kick, the 4,200 travelling fans chanted: "You dirty Northern b*****ds".
Clattenburg, typically, found himself at the centre of controversy when he didn't give what looked like a penalty when the ball struck Kyle Naughton's arm.
Latest score after 35 minutes: Tottenham 0-0 Brighton.
8:37 pm
David Anderson
Anderson at the Etihad
Newcastle stun Manchester City by taking the lead at the Etihad - and should have gone in two up.
City defending was poor at West Ham on Saturday and their backline is all at sea again as defender Paul Dummett fails to convert a glorious chance.
He arguably should have had a penalty as Eliaquim Mangala pulls him to the ground, wrestling before Newcastle take a corner on the right.
Dummett gets up and is left totally unmarked by Mangala to guide a shot at goal from six yards out, which is saved by Willy Caballero.
There is a strange atmosphere inside the Etihad and the City fans can barely believe what they are seeing and the Blues are well below their best.
Newcastle's fans are loving it and their evening is going much better than they feared.
8:43 pm
The shot statistics tell you everything you need to know about the opening 45 minutes at the Etihad.
Manchester City have been on top but their lack of a clinical striker in the 18-yard box has cost them dearly.
Newcastle are much more clinical when they get their chance in front of goal.
Rolando Aarons bagged with the Magpie's first effort of the game - and arguably, Newcastle should have scored again.

HT Spurs 0-0 Brighton
At the break at White Hart Lane and no breakthrough for either side.
Tottenham are so flat.
No wonder Mauricio Pochettino looks frustrated on the touchline.
They've had a lot of possession and some pressure but not tested Brighton keeper Christian Walton nearly enough.
More from all the games in the Capital One Cup right here on this blog through the evening, including the draw at the conclusion of events.

46' Stoke 0-2 Southampton
And as soon as Spurs and Brighton made it to half-time, Southampton are back underway at Stoke.
They lead 2-0 thanks to goals from Pelle and Long in the first-half - and if you get chance to watch the Pelle strike this evening, it is well worth doing.
Ronald Koeman's master stroke at Saints looks set to continue as they look dominant in their fourth round tie.

Update from Spurs
Goalless at half time. Very flat.
Mark Clattenburg probably wishes he was at an Ed Sheeran gig.
Tottenham have had a couple of efforts, no more.
Brighton had a penalty appeal after Naughton handled.
8:51 pm
GOAL! Stoke 1-2 Saints (Nzonzi)
Game on at the Britannia!
The hosts have brought the game back to within one thanks to a strike from Nzonzi.
All games are now within one goal. stay tuned with us for three exhilarating second periods!
8:53 pm
46' City 0-1 Newcastle
We are back underway in our feature game this evening.
Newcastle have made one change at the break, with goalscorer Rolando Aarons making way.
On comes Sammy Ameobi, who hasn't managed to get on the score sheet seven seconds into his showing like he did on Saturday at Spurs.
City are the ones chasing the game at the moment... only a matter of time before we see Sergio Aguero?
8:55 pm
Yet ANOTHER injury problem for Manchester City, this time with Kolarov the one on the ground.
He sliced the ball out of play to ask for treatment on his elbow - and looks in some serious discomfort.
The injury was sustained as he competed for a header with Gabriel Obertan.
He looks in serious pain but with strapping on his arm, he is going to be doing all he can to continue.
City do have Gael Clichy on the bench, if need be.

Crossie gets spooked at Spurs
What's that rule about never working with children or animals...
The half time entertainment consists of three kids dressed up as Halloween characters.
The first one didn't have a favourite player, the second said Paulinho (on the bench), the third said Lamela (also on the bench).
We had a game of guess who is behind the Halloween mask.
It was... Kyle Walker. Yes, he really still exists.
8:59 pm
Our man John Cross is having a whale of a time of Twitter at half-time of Spurs v Brighton.
He has come across a Mark Clattenburg parody account, featuring photos of the referee at gigs.
These Twitter users are quick with their ideas, aren't they...
9:01 pm
Newcastle have the ball in the net again - but it is flagged offside.
Gabriel Obertan unleashed a thunderbolt of an effort into the roof of the net, but the whistle went before he took the shot and the Frenchman did not complain about the decision.
Positive start for the Toon for the second period, who look to add to their lead.
City 0-1 Newcastle.
9:03 pm
46' Spurs 0-0 Brighton
Game back underway at White Hart Lane.
Still goalless and according to our man John Cross, Spurs need a little more invention in their attack.
Update on Kyle Walker from half-time, while he was getting involved in the interval festivities and got on the microphone...
Walker said: "It shouldn't be long now. I'm concentrating on trying to get fit rather than scare people."

Stats and a sub
It is only going on way on the pitch at the Etihad... but City cannot find a breakthrough.
Manuel Pellegrini's men are dominating possession as we would generally expect, but how long can Newcastle survive the pressure?
Yaya Toure, captain for the night, has been taken off and is replaced by another attacking option in Jesus Navas.

Update from Crossie
Rather like Sunday, Tottenham weren't ready for the restart - where Sammy Ameobi found the back of the net seven seconds into the second half.
Well, at least their sub wasn't.
Erik Lamela came on for Aaron Lennon - when he eventually came out.
The two teams were out on the pitch long before Lamela appeared, much to Pochettino's frustration.
9:09 pm
Newcastle's turn to have an injury scare, as Abeid goes down with a facial injury and needs treatment.
Replays show that there probably was a foul that forced him to go down, but this was not picked up by referee Stuart Attwell, much to the displeasure of Abeid.
City still trail 1-0 to the Magpies, who are on course for their third win on the bounce. How about that, Pardew?
9:11 pm
Subs for Newcastle
Janmaat and Armstrong have both been replaced for Newcastle.
Riviere and Sissoko have been put on in their place as the Toon look to push on for a second goal and kill off this game.
It will take some doing, though, as City are only increasing their possession statistics.
They are not creating many chances, however, which will be good news for Alan Pardew.
9:13 pm
GOAL! Spurs 1-0 Brighton
Finally! A breakthrough at White Hart Lane.
Erik Lamela with a spectacular rabona strike! ...not really, but he has scored.
The 22-year-old is in fine form in cup competitions at the moment and will surely now justify his price tag.
More on the goal from Crossie when we get it. But finally, a sigh of relief in north London, it would seem.
9:16 pm
Big, big, big call for Stuart Attwell.
Kolarov could be extremely lucky to stay on the pitch as he unleashes a wild lunge towards the ball - but does not win it!
Gabriel Obertan was brought down in the challenge whilst one-on-one.
It was a certain foul (inside or outside the box debatable) and a certain red card.
Just the lifeline that City need? We will see. They still trail 1-0.
Mangala picks up a yellow card for an earlier altercation.
9:16 pm

More on the Spurs goal
Spurs lead.
Lovely goal.
Soldado and Lamela combined beautifully before Lamela slotted in right footed.
9:19 pm
As it stands
Newcastle, Tottenham and Southampton are all heading through to the quarter-finals if things stay as they are.
But only one goal in each game.
City 0-1 Newcastle
Stoke 1-2 Southampton
Tottenham 1-0 Brighton
9:20 pm
Yellow card (Aguero)
The little Argentinian has hardly been on the pitch and he has already been cautioned.
A sign of panic from the City players?
9:22 pm
GOAL! City 0-2 Newcastle (Sissoko)
It is a stunning goal by Moussa Sissoko, fresh off the bench!
First he twists and turns, creating space on the edge of the area and fooling the City defenders.
He darts down the left channel into the box and prods past Caballero - who could have done better again - and into the far corner.
Newcastle fans erupt into the Poznan, the infamous City celebration.
Big, big shock on the cards right here.
City need two goals in the last 13 minutes to take it to extra-time.
9:25 pm
GOAL! Stoke 2-2 Saints (Diouf)
What a turnaround at the Britannia!
Mama Briam Diouf has levelled it in Staffordshire and the game which was some comfortably Southampton's 35 minutes ago, now looks set for extra-time.
Stay with us, we will bring you all of the updates from all of the games ahead of the quarter-final draw right here.
9:27 pm
City are coming out all guns blazing now - but they trail by two!
Milner has just fired across the face of the goal with a host of City players all in the middle of the area.
You get the feeling that this one might not be over yet, there is 10 minutes left to play... and we all know City like to leave it late.
Newcastle on course for third consecutive win in all comps. City on course for second third game without a win in the same regard.
9:30 pm
Sissoko's goal has been given the thumbs up from one of the Premier League's all-time great strikers.
The solo effort put the Toon 2-0 up and looks set to give Manuel Pellegrini his first ever defeat in the Capital One Cup.
9:32 pm
HOW DID THAT STAY OUT?!
City will have no idea how Dzeko did not just get one back for Pellegrini's men.
Silva's ball across the middle meets the Bosnian on the six-yard box, whose effort is cleared off the line by Ryan Taylor.
Heroic effort from the defencer.
Now Navas has fired wide.
All too late for City, though, it seems.
9:33 pm
GOAL! Stoke 2-3 (
The day has been saved at the Britannia as Graziano Pelle bags a free-kick in stoppage time!
Southampton's tirade to the top continues!
9:34 pm
RED CARD (Crouch)
In the build-up to the Pelle goal, it seems Peter Crouch was sent off for his second booking for Stoke.
Even more remarkable, Crouch was only on the pitch for 14 minutes! One of the quickest red cards this season.
As it stands: City 0-2 Newcastle; Stoke 2-3 Saints; Spurs 1-0 Brighton.
9:35 pm

GOAL! Spurs 2-0 Brighton (Kane)

6 added minutes
The referee has added SIX added minutes at the Etihad Stadium.
Enough time for City to score twice? It would seem not.
Fans are already leaving the stadium, disappointed with yet another abject City performance.
But full credit to Alan Pardew and Newcastle. Inspired performance with a pacey and counter-attack dangerous side.
They have really deserved the lead - and could have arguably scored more.
9:40 pm
FT Stoke 2-3 Southampton
Graziano Pelle is the hero once again for Southampton, as he scored late to secure the win for Saints.
He had earlier scored a thronker to fire the visitors into the lead, before Shane Long doubled the lead.
Nzonzi and Diouf got goals back for Stoke in the second half, but it all came down to a last minute strike from the Italian.
Crouch was sent off in the dying moments, but it is Southampton into the hat.
9:42 pm
FT City 0-2 Newcastle
Unbelieveable. Newcastle have done it.
Surely the result of the round, as the Magpies come away with a win at the Etihad Stadium for the first time ever - and it is their third on the bounce in all competitions.
Rolando Aarons got the ball rolling inside 10 minutes, putting the visitors ahead.
And super sub Moussa Sissoko scored a fine solo strike to double the lead and seal the game.
The holders are out! Who could have seen that coming?!
Some very happy Geordies tonight.
9:45 pm

That is that, the draw is set for the quarter-finals.
Spurs add their name into the draw with a routine victory against their Championship opponents - and it seems like Spurs never left third gear.

Right, all attention on the draw now!

Get yer match reports
If you want to recap tonight's action, then let me give you a polite shove in the direction of our match reports.
David Anderson was at the Etihad to see holders Manchester City unceremoniously dumped out, while Erik Lamela proved he doesn't have to cross his legs to score, as he put Spurs on the way to a 2-0 win over Championship side Brighton.
Goals galore on the red and white stripes derby, as Southampton striker Graziano Pelle's brace - including a late, late winnier - was enough to see off a Stoke side that was reduced to ten men when sub Peter Crouch was given two yellow cards in a 14-minute cameo.

Almost time for us to call it an evening here, but not before we've dispatched a little bit more wisdom your way.
Everyday's a school day, so here's seven things we learned from an entertaining night of Capital One Cup action that saw Newcastle win at the Etihad, Spurs brush off Brighton and the Southampton juggernaut rolls on.
Here's a recap of the draw - Liverpool's visit to Bournemouth and the Spurs-Newcastle clash stand out - with all that to look forward to the week before Christmas.
Plenty to do before then though - not least find out how bad David Silva's injury is ahead of this weekend's Manchester derby, so don't go changing from MirrorFootball.
Thanks for stopping by folks...
