With a huge weekend of Premier League football ahead, we ponder 10 questions that will be answered by Monday evening...
What are Chelsea like without the Nemanja Matic?
Just how pivotal is midfielder Nemanja Matic to Premier League leaders Chelsea’s game? Well, we’ll find out this weekend at Newcastle. The Serb, who has played in every minute of Chelsea’s Premier League season, is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Tottenham.
Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas have claimed all the headlines this season after their big-money transfers, but most Chelsea fans will tell you that their unbeaten start has been built around the controlled presence of their midfield lynchpin. Saturday lunchtime's kick-off offers a good test of Jose Mourinho's squad strength.
Can Arsenal run the Stoke gauntlet?
Stoke skipper Ryan Shawcross has warned Arsenal to expect a cauldron of hate at the Britannia Stadium. "The fans dislike Arsenal so it’s going to be a tasty game. Hopefully the atmosphere will be buzzing and we can get three points," said the defender earlier this week.
It’s a rivalry that has some roots from when a Shawcross tackle left Aaron Ramsey with a broken leg. Mark Hughes’ team are bidding to bounce back from three defeats on the spin but have won four and drawn two of their seven home games against the Gunners.
Will Rodgers stick or twist with Gerrard?
At the start of a huge period of games for Liverpool, will Brendan Rodgers give Steven Gerrard a break ahead of important fixtures against Basel and Manchester United? The Liverpool boss hit the headlines for leaving him out against Stoke last Saturday, but restored him in midweek to play a goalscoring role against Leicester.
Sunderland are in town this weekend and Gerrard has scored one and assisted three more in his last three league games against the Black Cats. On the eve of a huge domestic and European week, Rodgers could go either way...
Will Aguero continue his goalscoring Serge?
Sunderland were on the receiving end of an Aguero assault when he scored two and made one in Wednesday's 4-1 blitz and their manager had this advice for Roberto Martinez: “You need to be very good individually, you need to be aware, you need to be powerful, you need to be quick and you need to cover each other. You need to always concentrate and you need to be spot on."Sergio Aguero scored in both of the league clashes between Manchester City and Everton last season and he has now scored more goals than Sunderland (13), Burnley (10) and Aston Villa (8) in the Premier League this season (14).
The Everton back four may have trouble sleeping on Friday night.
Can United end their away-day blues?
Just six of Manchester United’s 25 points so far this season have been claimed away from Old Trafford and they have won just once on the road, but four straight wins have eased the pressure on Louis van Gaal’s shoulders.
St Mary's has been a fortress this season, but Southampton’s confidence is wobbling following defeats against Man City and Arsenal. Plus with injuries to the likes of Jack Cork, Toby Alderweireld, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse, United may be travelling at just the right time.
Will Saido Berahino end his dry spell?
It’s no coincidence that since West Brom’s star striker stopped banging them in, the Baggies' form has nosedived – they have lost their last four matches. The 21-year-old has not found the net since converting a late penalty against Crystal Palace in October – 436 minutes of football ago.
The pressure is growing on Baggies boss Alan Irvine but he insists he does not fear losing his job following a meeting with chairman Jeremy Peace earlier this week. However, defeat to Hull, who are just a point below them in the bottom-half scrap, will not leave him sleeping easy on Saturday night.
Austin v Ings: which English rose will bloom?
Charlie Austin has scored four goals in QPR’s last three Premier League home games while Burnley’s hotshot Danny Ings has bagged three in his last four. Both have huge goalscoring responsibilities on their shoulders for this weekend’s key relegation clash at Loftus Road. Roy Hodgson will be keeping a close eye, for sure.
The Clarets edged above QPR in the table with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in midweek and have now gone four matches unbeaten in the top-flight for the first time since October 1975. They are also unbeaten in their last nine matches against QPR in all competitions and will be looking to build on their last away outing when they won 2-1 at Stoke.
Is Harry’s top-four talk genuine?
Spurs fans have endured a frustrating start to the campaign, seeing their side lose four of their seven Premier League home games, but Harry Kane told Sky Sports this week that a Champions League qualifying berth is still an achievable goal for Mauricio Pochettino's men. They are just four points off the pace and will edge closer to Kane’s target with a win over Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane.
Pochettino acknowledged his side need to be more clinical after missing a couple of early opportunities in their 3-0 loss to the Premier League leaders. They will be desperate not to make the same mistakes in front of their own fans at White Hart Lane, where Spurs have lost four of their seven league matches this season.
Will West Ham end the weekend in third spot?
With third-placed Southampton and fourth-placed Manchester United clashing on Monday Night Football, the Hammers could be in nosebleed territory this weekend. Relegation fears have been replaced by European qualification in east London and the Hammers will leap up to third with a win over fellow high-flyers Swansea City.
However, Garry Monk's men know that victory will see them leapfrog their opponents in the table and the Welsh outfit could be realistic top-four contenders if they can string a run of results together over the Christmas period.
Wayward attack meets robust defence – only one winner?
Since firing five past Manchester United in September, Leicester City have scored just five goals in nine games and are rock bottom of the Premier League. Things don’t get much easier this weekend as they travel to defensively sound Aston Villa who, despite a battered and bruised back four, have conceded just two goals in their last four games.
Villa are not much better in front of goal themselves - they have found the net just eight times in their 14 games this season - but come into this game high on confidence after getting a huge 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.
